


the ritual goes we should bathe in these thirthas then take bath in sea and enter the temple, because the sea here is also sacred. the sacred bathing places at thiruchendur are Murkaramba thirtha, Devyanaitirtha, Lakshmi thirtha. Surasamharam festival is very famous over here,large number of devotees come over here to worship lord muruga. The Kandha sashti is celebrated in divine manner over here. It was Vadmalliyappa pillai an ardent devotee of lord Muruga together with Athitha nadar who retrieved the idol from the sea in 1663.the history is shown in the paintings in the temple. when the Dutch east India company wanted to leave Thiruchendur in 1648, they took the Murugan idol in their ship and started their journey when they were in the mid sea they encountered a strong storm so they stopped immediately and dropped the idol into the sea,then the storm stopped and they could proceed with their journey. During Tsunami all the coastal cities faced fatal disaster but being just 200 metres away from the sea this temple did not face any attacks instead the sea receded away from the shore temple around 1200 meters Thiruchendur was built by 3 siddhars. The temple is situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal.

Thiruchendur Murugan temple is known as the second Arupadai veedu of Lord Muruga. The temple is open from 5am to 9pm.The temple has a seven -tier gopuram The principal entrance faces south, and opens into the first of 2 prakarams and is lined with rows of yalis. This temple is 40 kms from Tuticorin a town at south of India and its 75 kms north east of Kanyakumari.
